Legislation to establish Southeast New Mexico Community College Passes the Senate

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Senate today passed legislation to give independence to New Mexico State University’s Carlsbad branch campus through the creation of Southeast New Mexico Community College. The bill sponsor, Senator Gay Kernan (District 42-Chaves, Eddy, and Lea), issued the following statement in response to the bill’s passage:

“The passage of this legislation is a big win for the people and students of Carlsbad and southeastern New Mexico. The establishment of Southeast New Mexico Community College will allow the school to be more efficient and responsive to the needs of our area. The redesignation of this college is in direct response to a number of letters and resolutions seeking better outcomes for students. The mission of a community college should always be reflective of the immediate community which it serves. I want to again thank Representative Cathrynn Brown and the local task force that studied this transition. With today’s favorable Senate vote, we are one step closer to making this transition a reality.”

Senate Bill 236 will now advance to the House of Representatives for consideration.
