SANTA FE – Senate Joint Resolution 5 (SJR 5), sponsored by Senator Gregg Schmedes (District 19-Bernailillo, Sandoval, Santa Fe, and Torrance), today advanced from the Senate Rules Committee with bipartisan support. SJR 5 proposes an amendment to the New Mexico Constitution to protect school districts and charter schools from unfunded government mandates – a protection already given to municipalities and counties.
“This common sense amendment would shield our schools from problematic unfunded mandates and deliver greater local control to those elected by their communities” said Senator Schmedes. “The New Mexico School Boards Association has consistently listed this proposal as one of their top priorities and I share their belief that local decision-making authority is a vital component of public education.”
SJR 5 will now be referred to the Senate Education Committee. If passed by the Legislature, the proposed constitutional amendment will be voted on by New Mexico voters at the next regular election.
