SANTA FE — Today, Senate Republican Leader, Senator Greg Baca (R-Belen), Senator Mark Moores (R-Albuquerque), and Senator Cliff Pirtle (R-Roswell) successfully tabled Senate Bill 171 in the Senate Judiciary Committee with bipartisan support. During the debate, several members of the committee raised concerns about the constitutionality of the measure which would prohibit the manufacture, sale, barter, trade, gift, transfer, or acquisition of “automatic firearms.” The bill was tabled on a 6-3 vote.
Senator Baca released the following statement applauding the bill’s tabling:
“I applaud my colleagues for tabling this unconstitutional bill. Like most of the gun bills being considered this Session, Senate Bill 171 needlessly targets law-abiding citizens and threatens them with a felony for exercising their Second Amendment right. At a time when our state is being overrun by violent crime, I would urge my colleagues to start targeting the criminals instead of New Mexico gun owners who only want to protect themselves and their families.”
