Senator Bill Sharer Issues Statement Regarding Paid Family Medical Leave Tax on Workers and Small Businesses

SANTA FE – Senate Bill 11, the Paid Family Medical Leave Act, today passed the Senate on a 23-15 vote with all Republicans and two Democrats voting against the measure. The bill would mandate that all employers offer 12 weeks of paid family medical leave to employees. The leave compensation would be paid for by employer contributions and employee payroll deductions made to the Paid Family and Medical Leave Fund.

Senator Bill Sharer (R-Farmington), issued the following statement regarding the passage of the bill:

“This is a regressive tax that will disproportionately impact low-wage workers and small businesses. Working-class New Mexicans will be forced to pay for a benefit they may never use and local businesses will be crippled by employees who abuse the system.”
