Senator Craig Brandt Introduces Teacher Tax Deduction for School Supplies

SANTA FE – Senate Republican Whip, Senator Craig Brandt (R-Rio Rancho), has introduced Senate Bill 28 to provide a tax deduction for teachers who purchase their own school supplies. The bill would allow for a $500 deduction from net income this year and $1,000 deduction beginning in 2024.

Senator Brandt released the following statement regarding the legislation:

“It is unconscionable that in a state where we are going to spend a record $4.3 billion dollars on public education, that teachers would still have to go into their own pockets to purchase basic school supplies for their classrooms. This bill is a stopgap measure to give our teachers a bit of a break until we can deal with the monumental bureaucratic overhead that is keeping dollars out of the classroom.”

Senate Bill 28 will be heard this Thursday in the Senate Tax, Business, and Transportation Committee at 1:30 p.m.
