Senator Craig Brandt's Education Freedom Act Tabled by Senate Education Committee
Legislation would have given parents the freedom to choose the best K-12 education for their children
SANTA FE — Today, Senate Bill 109, the Education Freedom Act sponsored by Senator Craig Brandt (R-Rio Rancho), was tabled by the Senate Education Committee on a party-line vote. All Democrats on the committee voted as a bloc to table the measure.
Following the bill's tabling, Senator Brandt issued the following statement:
“The Senate Education Committee largely agreed that our education system in New Mexico is broken. What I found shameful was when faced with an opportunity to make significant and forward-thinking changes, the chairman was more interested in protecting the unions than helping disadvantaged children.”
“Our current system fails most of our children and has disproportionately failed poor and minority students. Until the administration can answer the multi-billion dollar question as to why our current system is failing, I will not accept the status quo as our future."
