Senator Greg Baca Releases Statement Regarding Unused Belen Flood Control Funds

BELEN – Following the recent state of emergency in Belen caused by flooding, Senator Greg Baca (District 29-Bernalillo and Valencia) today released a statement urging local leaders to expend available funds for flood control:

“Our community is still reeling from the damage caused by the flooding on Tuesday evening, and I am incredibly frustrated and disappointed. Not only did we see this problem coming, but I have been urging local officials to take action for months. In 2019, I secured $1.735 million dollars in Capital Outlay funds for a flood protection retention pond in Belen. Unfortunately, the City has yet to expend a dime of that funding. It should not take a devastating incident to address this issue, especially when the lives and livelihoods of those living in Belen are in jeopardy. I again urge the Mayor and other local officials to move forward with the planning, design, and construction of the Belen retention pond.”

The funding line item can be found here (page 256, line 14). Senator Baca’s request for those funds can be found here.
