Senator Gregg Schmedes Proposes Legislation to Ban TikTok on Government Devices and Networks
SANTA FE – Senator Gregg Schmedes (R-Tijeras) today introduced Senate Bill 208 to ban TikTok on state government-issued devices and networks. The legislation comes one month after President Joe Biden signed similar legislation banning the social media application from all federal government devices.
“In addition to the federal government, more than half of all the states have already banned TikTok from their government devices,” said Senator Schmedes. “Both the FBI and the FCC have warned about user data being shared with the Chinese government. This bill is a simple step we can take to mitigate national security risks and protect people’s personal information.”
Senate Bill 208 charges the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of state government with implementing controls to prevent the use of TikTok on state government-issued equipment or networks under their control. The bill was referred to Senate Rules Committee and the Senate Judiciary Committee.
